Atom: The smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Element: A substance made up of only one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Compound: A substance containing two or more different elements chemically bonded together in fixed proportions.
Mixture: Two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined, so each keeps its own properties.
Molecule: A particle made of two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds.
Chemical bond: A force of attraction that holds atoms together in compounds and molecules.
Nucleus: The small, dense, positively charged centre of an atom that contains protons and neutrons.
Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in the nucleus with a relative mass of 1.
