Key terms in Number

Integer: A whole number that can be positive, negative or zero, such as $-3$, $0$ or $7$. Integers have no fractional or decimal part.
Natural number: A positive whole number used for counting, such as $1$, $2$, $3$ and so on. Some definitions also include $0$.
Digit: A single symbol from $0$ to $9$ used to write numbers. The number $452$ is made from the digits $4$, $5$ and $2$.
Place value: The value a digit has because of its position in a number. In $356$ the digit $3$ has a place value of $300$.
Positive number: A number greater than zero, often written with or without a plus sign, such as $5$ or $+5$.
Negative number: A number less than zero, written with a minus sign, such as $-4$. It lies to the left of zero on a number line.
Number line: A straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals, used to order numbers and carry out addition and subtraction.
Even number: A whole number exactly divisible by $2$ with no remainder, such as $2$, $4$ or $10$.
