Atom: The smallest particle of an element that can exist, made of a nucleus surrounded by electrons.
Element: A substance made of only one type of atom, all having the same number of protons.
Compound: A substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically combined.
Nucleus: The tiny, dense, positively charged centre of an atom containing protons and neutrons.
Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in the nucleus with a relative mass of 1.
Neutron: A subatomic particle with no charge found in the nucleus with a relative mass of 1.
Electron: A negatively charged subatomic particle that orbits the nucleus in energy levels.
Relative charge: The charge of a subatomic particle compared to a proton, being +1, -1 or 0.
