Key terms in Cell biology

Cell: The smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism; all organisms are built from one or more cells.
Cell biology: The branch of biology concerned with the structure, function and behaviour of cells.
Eukaryotic cell: A cell whose genetic material is enclosed within a membrane-bound nucleus; animal, plant and fungal cells are eukaryotic.
Prokaryotic cell: A cell that has no true nucleus, with its genetic material instead lying free in the cytoplasm; bacteria are prokaryotic.
Eukaryote: An organism made of one or more eukaryotic cells, each containing a nucleus.
Prokaryote: A single-celled organism, such as a bacterium, whose cell lacks a nucleus.
Animal cell: A eukaryotic cell containing a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes, but no cell wall or chloroplasts.
