Key terms in Organisation

Cell: The smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism, acting as the basic building block from which all tissues and organs are made.
Tissue: A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function, such as muscular tissue that contracts to produce movement.
Organ: A structure made of several different tissues working together to perform one or more specific jobs, for example the stomach or the heart.
Organ system: A group of organs that work together to carry out a major function in the body, such as the digestive system breaking down and absorbing food.
Organism: A complete living thing made up of organ systems working together; in larger animals and plants these systems coordinate to keep the whole body alive.
Levels of organisation: The arrangement of life from simple to complex: cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form organ systems, and these form the whole organism.
Digestive system: The organ system that breaks down food into small soluble molecules and absorbs them into the blood, made up of organs such as the stomach, intestines, pancreas and liver.
Enzyme: A protein that acts as a biological catalyst, speeding up a specific chemical reaction in living things without being used up itself.
