Periodic Table: A chart that arranges all known chemical elements in order of increasing proton number into rows and columns based on shared properties.
Proton number: The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the element's identity and its position in the Periodic Table.
Atomic number: Another name for the proton number, used to order elements in the Periodic Table from left to right and top to bottom.
Group: A vertical column of elements in the Periodic Table whose members share similar chemical properties.
Period: A horizontal row of elements in the Periodic Table across which properties change gradually from metal to non-metal.
Group number: The number identifying a group that equals the number of electrons in the outer shell of its main-group elements.
Period number: The number identifying a period that equals the number of occupied electron shells in its atoms.
