Key terms in Coordination and response
Coordination: The way an organism detects changes and produces suitable responses so that all its parts work together.
Stimulus: A change in the internal or external environment that an organism can detect and respond to.
Response: A change in an organism produced by a stimulus, carried out by an effector.
Sensitivity: The ability of an organism to detect and respond to changes (stimuli) in its environment.
Receptor: A cell or group of cells that detects a specific stimulus and starts an electrical impulse.
Effector: A muscle or gland that carries out a response when stimulated by a nerve impulse or hormone.
Nervous system: The system of the brain, spinal cord and nerves that uses electrical impulses to provide fast coordination and response.
Mammalian nervous system: The nervous system made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
