Practice questions with answers

1 Multiple choice · Easy

Which process produces genetically identical offspring from a single parent?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyAsexual reproduction involves only one parent and produces clones.
2 Multiple choice · Easy

What is a gamete?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyGametes are sex cells that fuse during fertilisation.
3 Multiple choice · Easy

Which is the male gamete in humans?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyThe sperm is the male gamete and the egg is the female gamete.
4 Multiple choice · Easy

In a flower, which part produces pollen?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyThe anther is the part of the stamen that produces pollen grains.
5 Multiple choice · Easy

What is pollination?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyPollination is the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.
6 Multiple choice · Easy

Where are sperm cells produced in the human male?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyThe testes produce sperm cells.
7 Multiple choice · Easy

Where does fertilisation normally occur in the human female?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyFertilisation takes place in the oviduct (fallopian tube).

Which of the following is an advantage of asexual reproduction?

Tap an answer to check it.

WhyAsexual reproduction is rapid and needs no mate, allowing fast population increase.

Key terms in Reproduction

Reproduction: The biological process by which living organisms produce new individuals of the same species.
Asexual reproduction: A process that produces genetically identical offspring from one parent, without the fusion of gametes.
Sexual reproduction: A process involving the fusion of the nuclei of two gametes (sex cells) to form a zygote, producing offspring that are genetically different from the parents.
Clone: An organism that is genetically identical to its parent, produced by asexual reproduction.
Advantages of asexual reproduction: Only one parent is needed, reproduction is rapid and no mate is required, allowing fast colonisation of a suitable environment.
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction: All offspring are genetically identical, so the population has little variation and may all be wiped out by a single disease or environmental change.
Advantages of sexual reproduction: It produces genetic variation, so some offspring may be better able to survive disease or environmental change.
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction: Two parents are usually needed and reproduction is slower, requiring more time and energy to find a mate.
